The Steiner BluHorizons 10 x 26 is a roof prism binocular with 10x magnification and AutoBright adaptive lens technology meant to cut glare. It weighs 10.6 ounces and has a polycarbonate Makrolon housing with NBR rubber armor. A central focusing wheel needs little rotation to go from close up to infinity, and the eyecups fold down for use with eyeglasses. Water protection is rated IPX4, described as water-resistant.
Our take
The IPX4 rating is described only as water-resistant, so keep these binoculars out of the water and away from dunking. At 10.6 ounces they are light to hold for long scans, and the eyecups fold down if you wear eyeglasses.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
