This is a Seachoice three-strand twisted nylon anchor line, 1/2 inch in diameter and 150 feet long. It is white with a blue tracer woven in, so you can keep an eye on how the rope is wearing over time. The nylon is meant to take up sudden shock loads, and a galvanized steel thimble comes on the end for attaching an anchor. No chain is listed with it, so this is the rope portion of a rode.

Our take

Three-strand nylon is sold here as a shock absorber, which is what you want between a pitching bow and a set anchor. The blue tracer lets you inspect wear by eye, and the supplied thimble means the anchor end is ready to shackle on.

From our buying guide

The Coast Guard's general guidance is to let out five to seven times the depth of water plus the distance from the surface to the bow. Samson says nylon is used in anchor lines because its elasticity absorbs shock loads.

Check before you buy:

  • The length gives you that scope in the water where you anchor.
  • The chain included is what you want, since products include different lengths of chain: 4 ft in some and 15 ft in others.
  • You can get at any rope-to-chain splice, which New England Ropes says to check regularly and remake at any evidence of wear.
