The Rocna Vulcan in the 40 kg (88 lb) size is a galvanized anchor with no roll-bar. Without the bar it clears bow platforms, bowsprits and stays, and the curved shank is meant to help it launch and come back aboard on most bow rollers. The shank has an I-beam geometry for strength, and the fluke area is 307 sq in. A lifetime warranty covers breakage or deformation.
Our take
The 40 kg Vulcan's curved shank is meant to launch and retrieve smoothly on most bow rollers, and without a roll-bar it clears bow platforms, bowsprits and stays. Its 307 sq in fluke is the area behind the holding power the maker claims.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
