The Rocna Vulcan is a roll-bar-free take on the original Rocna, and this is the 20 lb (9 kg) galvanized steel size. Leaving off the roll-bar lets it sit snug on a bow. Its shank and fluke geometry with a roll-palm self-right it on the seabed, and a V-bulb fin angles the tip in. Size comes from vessel length and displacement on the maker's chart, worked out for 50 knots of wind. It has a lifetime warranty against breakage or deformation.
Our take
With no roll-bar, this 20 lb (9 kg) Vulcan sits snug on the bow, and its fluke area is larger than competing designs. The maker sizes by vessel length and displacement, so pick from its chart rather than going by this weight alone.
From our buying guide
The Coast Guard does not regulate anchors, so no anchor carries its approval. Each maker sizes on its own assumptions, so a size on one chart does not translate to another.
Check before you buy:
- You know what wind the maker's chart assumes. Rocna's assumes 50 knots and Fortress's 30 knots.
- It fits your bow, since makers say some designs fit bow rollers, bow pulpits or bowsprits better.
- The type suits your bottom. A Coast Guard Auxiliary article says the right type depends a lot on your boat, your anchoring and the make-up of the bottom.
