The Ritchie SS-2000W is a flush mount marine compass from the SuperSport series, with a 4 1/2 inch (115 mm) blue dial and large white numerals. It is aimed at offshore race boat use and precise heading work. PowerDamp Plus dial technology reduces oscillation, and an internal gimbal keeps it steady in rough conditions. Built-in compensators allow deviation adjustment, and 12V green LED illumination is standard. It needs a mounting hole of 4.75 to 5.125 inches (121 to 130 mm), and comes with a replacement mounting gasket and a 5-year warranty.
Our take
The internal gimbal paired with PowerDamp Plus damping means the card is built to settle quickly when the boat is pitching and rolling, which is what you want from a helm compass offshore. Built-in compensators let you trim out deviation yourself after installation.

Ritchie says a magnetic compass needs no electrical power to work, and that a GPS gives course over ground, not heading. Magnets, ferrous metals and current-carrying devices near it can cause deviation, so the spot matters too.
Check before you buy:
- It's balanced for where you boat. Ritchie advises buying the zone central to where you boat.
- The dial suits your helm. A flat card is read from above, and a direct-read dial from directly in front.
- You can compensate it, since not every compass has built-in compensators.
