The Harken 2656 is a 40 mm fiddle block with a swivel head and a becket. The body is black nylon reinforced with glass, and the sheave runs on ball bearings with rounded races meant to keep friction low. It weighs 1.9 oz, takes line up to 3/8 inch and carries a safe working load of 485 lb. Harken recommends the 40 mm size for dinghy vangs and mainsheets rigged as 3:1 or 4:1 purchases. The open design makes maintenance straightforward.
Our take
A 485 lb safe working load, 3/8 inch maximum line and 1.9 oz of weight mark the 2656 as a small-boat block, and its ball bearings with rounded races are there to keep friction low on 3:1 and 4:1 dinghy purchases. Swivel and becket are both included.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
