This is the Harken 40 mm Carbo block with a swivel, a becket and a cam cleat. The body is fiber-reinforced composite, with UV-stabilized ball bearings, sheave and side plates. It carries an SWL of 300 lbs, takes line up to 3/8 inch and weighs 4.3 oz. Harken points it at main and jib sheets and at control lines.
Our take
The built-in cam cleat on this Carbo block holds a line at the block itself, and it also has a becket and a swivel. Ball bearings run the sheave, and the maker names main and jib sheets and control lines as its jobs.
From our buying guide
Ball-bearing blocks give the lowest friction on lines running under moderate loads. Plain bearings have more friction, but handle very high and static loads.
Check before you buy:
- A ratchet block is rated for the full sheet load.
- Any becket's load limit suits the job, since a becket can be rated below the block itself.
- A soft-attach block will be looked after, since Harken warns soft attachments are prone to wear and recommends them only for regularly maintained race boats.
