The Fujinon Techno-Stabi TS Compact is a 12x28 roof prism binocular with an electronic gyro stabilizing system. Stabilization corrects up to 3 degrees and is switched on with a shift switch. The field of view is 73 m at 1000 m. The design is waterproof, and the pack includes an eyepiece cap, soft case, neckstrap and a CR2 lithium battery. Fujinon says the stabilizer gives a sharp image at high magnification without a tripod.
Our take
The gyro stabilizer, with 3 degrees of correction, is what lets a 12x glass be used handheld without a tripod, which matters on a moving deck. The waterproof design covers spray, and the battery in the pack runs the stabilizer.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
