The Davis Shockles LineSnubber is a 20 inch blue shock absorber for dock lines. Its nylon webbing is UV stable and hollow, sewn over marine-grade elastomer, and two 316 stainless steel carabiners make attachment quick. The maker puts the working range on dock lines at 4 to 8 inches of stretch and says to begin with four inches. Every part is rated to at least 2,500 lb maximum working load, and a patented Stretch Limiter guards against complete failure if it is rigged badly.
Our take
The 4 to 8 inch working stretch is the number to rig around: begin with four inches of slack and add more as surge and chop build. If you misjudge it, the Stretch Limiter is there to keep the snubber from failing outright, and all parts are rated to 2,500 lb.
From our buying guide
A snubber absorbs shock and prevents sudden jolts on a dock line. It doesn't replace the line: Davis says its Shockles must always be used in parallel with a strong rope or line.
Check before you buy:
- It's made for your line size, since some are sold by line size only, with no load or boat size.
- Your boat is within any limit the maker gives. Davis says up to 40 ft for its DockShockle, and Polyform up to 13,200 lb for its ST-1.
