The Davis Instruments Shockles LineSnubber is made to absorb shock on dock lines, booms and dinghies. This is the 20 inch black version. Its job is to take the sudden load out of a line so the shock is absorbed at the snubber rather than passed along the rest of the rig. On dock lines the correct working range is 4 to 8 inches of stretch, and that is the figure to plan around. Start with four inches of slack and add more if surge and chop increase. That gives the snubber room to work as conditions build, and it keeps the first setup in the range the product is built for.
Our take
This suits anyone who wants shock absorption on dock lines, booms or dinghies and can keep the stretch within 4 to 8 inches. Skip it for jobs outside those three. Its main limit is the stated working range: 4 to 8 inches of stretch on dock lines, so a rig that needs more travel falls outside what it is designed for.
From our buying guide
A snubber absorbs shock and prevents sudden jolts on a dock line. It doesn't replace the line: Davis says its Shockles must always be used in parallel with a strong rope or line.
Check before you buy:
- It's made for your line size, since some are sold by line size only, with no load or boat size.
- Your boat is within any limit the maker gives. Davis says up to 40 ft for its DockShockle, and Polyform up to 13,200 lb for its ST-1.
