The Bushnell A1 8x25 is a compact centre-focus binocular with 8x magnification and 25 mm objective lenses. Its field of view is 350 ft at 1000 yd, which works out to 116.2 m at 1000 m. The small objectives keep the body small for packing and carrying. The body is nitrogen filled, so it is waterproof and resists internal fogging. Focus is by a central wheel with a slip-resistant grip.
Our take
The 25 mm objective lenses keep the A1 small, so it stows easily and is simple to carry about. The nitrogen-filled body is sealed against water and internal fogging, which counts for something when the binoculars live near spray.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
