The Bushnell A1 8x25 is a compact binocular with 25 mm objectives and BAK4 prisms. Its optics are fully multicoated, and the field of view is 350 ft at 1000 yd, or 116.2 m at 1000 m. It is nitrogen filled to be waterproof and resist internal fogging. The center-focus wheel is slip resistant, and twist-up eyecups adjust for eyeglass wearers.
Our take
The 25 mm objectives keep the A1 8x25 compact, and the 350 ft field of view at 1000 yd gives a roomy picture at 8x. The slip-resistant center-focus wheel is meant to work in cold and wet weather, which counts on a wet deck.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
