The Xantrex TRUEcharge3 12V 40A is a compact three-stage battery charger with microprocessor control. It handles gel, flooded, AGM and LiFePO4 batteries, and its drip-proof build gives some freedom in where it is mounted. It accepts 90 to 265 V AC input at 47 to 63 Hz. Output is 40 A through 3 DC connections, and it is rated for banks of at least 80 Ah. It measures 9.8 by 6.7 by 2.8 inches.

Our take

The 80 Ah minimum bank size on this 40A model means it is rated for larger banks only. A small single battery falls below that stated floor, so size the charger to the bank. Parallel stacking also needs a remote panel.

From our buying guide

NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, not the battery's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.

Check before you buy:

  • It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
  • Its output suits your bank. ProMariner recommends about 10 percent of the batteries' total amp-hour capacity, with one charger output for each battery.
  • It suits how you'll use it, since ProMariner says its waterproof chargers are for batteries not in use while charging.
