The Xantrex TRUEcharge3 12V 20A is a compact three-stage battery charger with microprocessor control. It handles gel, flooded, AGM and LiFePO4 batteries, and its drip-proof build gives some freedom in where it is mounted. It accepts 90 to 265 V AC input at 47 to 63 Hz. Output is 20 A through 3 DC connections, and it is rated for banks of at least 40 Ah. It measures 9.8 by 6.7 by 2.8 inches.
Our take
The 40 Ah minimum bank size on this 20A charger is the number to check first. It is rated for banks of at least that capacity, so a very small battery falls below what the maker states. Parallel stacking also needs a remote panel.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, not the battery's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- Its output suits your bank. ProMariner recommends about 10 percent of the batteries' total amp-hour capacity, with one charger output for each battery.
- It suits how you'll use it, since ProMariner says its waterproof chargers are for batteries not in use while charging.
