The Whale Supersub 500 is a 12V non-automatic bilge pump rated at 500 GPH, with a 3/4 inch outlet. It draws the bilge down to 3/8 inch, and a built-in non-return valve stops water running back in. Maximum head discharge is 3 m (9.8 ft). The pump body is 7 inches long, 2-1/8 wide and 2-15/16 high. Being non-automatic, it needs a separate bilge pump switch to run it.
Our take
The Supersub 500 has no switch of its own, so you wire in a separate bilge pump switch to run it. The pump itself pulls the bilge down to 3/8 inch, and its non-return valve keeps that water from running back in.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
