The Whale Smartbail BP5012 is a compact manual bilge pump that mounts through a bulkhead. It comes with both 1 inch and 1-1/2 inch hose ports and is rated for up to 11.5 GPM. One person can install it from one side of the bulkhead, and the self-sealing design needs no sealant. A vented anti-syphon loop must be part of the system.
Our take
Because it installs from one side of the bulkhead and seals itself without sealant, the Smartbail can go into a cabinet wall where there is no room behind it. The vented anti-syphon loop it requires is extra plumbing to plan for.

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
