Flow at stated head
17.5 GPM at 70 strokes/min with 3 ft of lift

The Whale Mk5 Universal is a manual diaphragm pump for bilge pumping and water transfer, with 1-1/2 inch hose connections. It moves up to 18 GPM at 70 strokes per minute, and 17.5 GPM at that rate with 3 ft of lift. The body is polypropylene, with a nitrile diaphragm and non-choke valves, and the diaphragm is fully enclosed. It can be fitted in any orientation, on or under deck or bulkhead, and carries Lloyds (MSA) and USCG approval for lifeboat pump use.

Our take

Whale rates the Mk5 at up to 18 GPM at 70 strokes a minute, and 11 GPM at 45 strokes with 3 ft of lift, so the flow depends on how fast you pump. It also calls for a vented anti-syphon loop in the outlet hose.

From our buying guide

Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.

Check before you buy:

  • The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
  • An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
  • You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
