The Whale Gusher 30 is a manual, double-action diaphragm pump with twin diaphragms and a 1 1/2 inch hose connection. The body is aluminum alloy with an anodized and epoxy finish against corrosion, and the valves and diaphragms are nitrile for oily bilge water and diesel. At 3 ft of lift it moves 19 GPM at 45 strokes per minute and 29 GPM at 70. At 6 ft the figures are 18 and 28 GPM. Maximum self-priming height and maximum head are both 13-1/2 ft, and it is approved as a lifeboat bilge pump.
Our take
With nitrile valves and diaphragms, the Gusher 30 is built to cope with oily bilge water and diesel, and its valves, diaphragms and chambers can be serviced without tools. The model is for on deck mounting, so plan the hose run from the deck.
From our buying guide
Rule and Johnson both say their bilge pumps are not intended for damage control. Flow falls as the discharge head rises, and the length of the hose, its bends and any check valve reduce it further.
Check before you buy:
- The maker's own table shows the flow at head, since how much a pump loses depends on the model.
- An automatic pump also has a manual switch, which ABYC's voluntary 2005 standard calls for.
- You'll fuse it to the maker's figure.
