The Vortex Raptor is an 8.5 x 32 binocular built around porro prisms. It magnifies 8.5 times through 32 mm objective lenses and weighs 17.3 ounces. A single center wheel focuses both barrels together. The body is nitrogen purged for fogproof, waterproof performance. Eye relief is 14 mm and close focus is 15 feet.
Our take
Nitrogen purging gives the Raptor fogproof and waterproof sealing, so spray on a boat should not get inside it. At 17.3 ounces with a single center focus wheel, it is straightforward to refocus both barrels in one move when the view changes.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
