The Vortex Kaibab HD is a 20x56 roof prism binocular with a centre focus wheel that moves both barrels together. A locking diopter on the right eyepiece takes care of differences between your eyes. O-ring seals keep out moisture, dust and debris, and argon purging prevents internal fogging. The 56 mm lenses are meant to help in low light, and it can go on a tripod with an adapter.
Our take
Twenty times magnification is a lot to hold by hand, since every tremor is magnified with the view and a deck adds its own motion. The tripod adapter compatibility gives a way to steady it, and the O-ring seals and argon purging cover spray and fogging.
From our buying guide
Steiner calls 7x the marine standard. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and makes the image more sensitive to hand shake.
Check before you buy:
- The water rating comes with its depth and time, since ratings vary widely between makers.
- The maker says what floats, the body or only a strap, since some make no flotation claim at all.
- A stabilised pair has a water rating you're happy with, since not every one carries a waterproof rating.
