This is Victron's SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr VE.Can solar charge controller, with a rated charge current of 70 A and a maximum panel open-circuit voltage of 250 V. It selects 12 V, 24 V or 48 V battery voltage automatically and has Bluetooth built in. Nominal panel power is 1,000 W at 12 V and 4,000 W at 48 V, with a short-circuit current limit of 35 A per tracker. Up to 25 units can be daisy chained over VE.Can.
Our take
The 250 V maximum open-circuit voltage is the ceiling for a series panel string, and the 35 A short-circuit limit per tracker is the matching limit on the current side. Check both against the panel datasheet before wiring the array.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
