The SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr is a Victron solar charge controller with a 70 A rated charge current. It accepts up to 250 V of panel open circuit voltage and auto-selects 12 V, 24 V or 48 V battery systems. Bluetooth and a VE.Direct port handle communication, and the nominal panel power is 1,000 W on a 12 V battery. The connection area is rated IP22, with the electronics at IP43, and the controller is specified for indoor, unconditioned conditions.
Our take
The 70 A rated charge current pairs with 1,000 W of nominal panel power at 12 V, so that is the array size to plan around on a 12 V boat. The connection area is only IP22, so it needs a dry mounting spot.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
