The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-MC4 VE.Can is an MPPT solar charge controller with a 70 A rated charge current and a maximum panel open-circuit voltage of 250 V. Its panel inputs are two pairs of MC4 connectors, with a short-circuit limit of 35 A per tracker and 30 A per MC4 connection. Maximum efficiency is 99 %. Up to 25 units can run synchronised together over VE.Can.
Our take
A 250 V maximum open-circuit voltage sets the ceiling for a series string of panels, while the 35 A short-circuit limit per tracker and 30 A per MC4 connection govern how much current each input takes. Work out the panel layout against those three figures before wiring.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
