The SmartSolar MPPT 150/85-Tr VE.Can is a maximum power point tracking solar charge controller rated for 85 A of charge current. It accepts panels up to 150 V open circuit and charges a 12 V, 24 V or 48 V bank, selected automatically. Nominal panel power is 1,200 W at 12 V and 4,900 W at 48 V, with a 70 A short circuit limit per tracker. Peak efficiency is 98 %. The enclosure weighs 4.5 kg, so it needs a solid mounting surface.
Our take
At 4.5 kg, the 150/85 is a heavy box to hang on a bulkhead, so the mounting surface matters as much as the 85 A rating. The case is rated for indoor, unconditioned use, which points to a dry compartment below deck.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
