The SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr VE.Can is a maximum power point tracking solar charge controller rated for 70 A of charge current. It accepts a panel array up to 150 V open circuit and charges a 12 V, 24 V or 48 V battery bank, picking the voltage automatically. Panel capacity scales with the bank: 1,000 W at 12 V, 2,000 W at 24 V and 4,000 W at 48 V. It communicates over Bluetooth, VE.Direct and VE.Can, and up to 25 units can run synchronised on VE.Can.
Our take
The 150 V open-circuit voltage limit is the number to plan around, because your series panel string has to stay under it. Victron rates the case for indoor, unconditioned use, so it wants a dry spot below deck, not an exposed locker.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
