The SmartSolar MPPT 150/100-Tr VE.Can is a maximum power point tracking solar charge controller with a 100 A charge current rating. Panels can reach 150 V open circuit, and it charges a 12 V, 24 V or 48 V battery bank with automatic voltage selection. Nominal panel power is 1,450 W at 12 V and 5,800 W at 48 V. The enclosure weighs 4.5 kg, and up to 25 units can be synchronised over VE.Can.
Our take
The 100 A rating comes with a 150 V open-circuit input ceiling, so a big 12 V array has to be wired in parallel-heavy strings to stay under it. At 4.5 kg and rated for indoor, unconditioned use, it needs a sturdy mount in a dry space.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
