The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 is an MPPT solar charge controller for 12V and 24V battery banks. It is rated for 50 A of charge current and accepts up to 100 V of open-circuit panel voltage. Nominal panel power is 700 W on a 12V bank and 1,400 W on 24V. Peak efficiency is 98%, and it has built-in Bluetooth. The enclosure is rated IP22 in the connection area and IP43 over the electronic components.
Our take
The 700 W nominal rating on a 12V bank becomes 1,400 W on 24V while the charge rating stays at 50 A, so the same controller can carry twice the panel power if the boat runs a 24V system. Its protections cover output short-circuit, excessive temperature and reversed panel polarity.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
