The SmartSolar MPPT 100/20 is a Bluetooth-equipped solar charge controller rated for 20 A of charge current. It picks 12, 24 or 48 V battery voltage on its own and reaches 98 percent peak efficiency. The panel side accepts up to 100 V open circuit through a single tracker. Nominal PV power is 290 W on a 12 V bank. Panel voltage must exceed battery voltage by 5 V before it starts charging.
Our take
Start-up needs the panel voltage to clear battery voltage by 5 V, so string length has to be planned around that margin. With one tracker and a 100 V open-circuit limit, every panel feeds the same input, and the whole array has to suit that one input.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
