Victron's Smart BMS 12/200 protects its LiFePO4 Smart Batteries on 12 V systems. It does the jobs of a current limiter, a battery combiner and a protector in one unit. Bluetooth handles monitoring and configuration, and there is a remote on/off connector. The System+ port is rated for 100 A maximum charge and discharge current, with a 400 A peak discharge current. The case is IP65 and the operating range runs from -40 to 60 °C.

Our take

A 400 A peak discharge rating against a 100 A maximum on the System+ port means it can ride out brief surges well above its working limit. Size your loads to the 100 A figure, and note it is a 12 V unit.

From our buying guide

BCI defines a battery management system as an electronic system that monitors a battery's condition, performance and health. Some lithium batteries have one built in and some need an external unit.

Check before you buy:

  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
  • There is no one low-temperature limit for charging lithium, so take it from the manual for the battery you have.
