The Victron Smart BatteryProtect 48V-100A cuts the battery off from loads that are not essential, protecting it from running flat. It works across a 44 to 64 V operating range and has Bluetooth. It is rated for 100 A continuous up to 40°C, dropping to 60 A at up to 60°C, with a 600 A peak for 30 seconds. Current flows in one direction only, and the electronics are rated IP67.

Our take

The connection area is rated IP00 while the electronics inside are IP67, so the bolted terminals get no protection of their own. Where it is mounted and how much spray reaches the terminals is the installer's job to sort out.

From our buying guide

NMMA says not to mix battery chemistries or types in the same bank, and the makers add their own limits.

Check before you buy:

  • Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.
  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
  • Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
