Victron's Smart BatteryProtect 12/24V-220A cuts non-essential loads off a battery before it runs fully flat. It detects a 12 V or 24 V system automatically and carries 220 A continuous up to 40°C, falling to 132 A at 60°C, with a 600 A peak rating for 30 seconds. It has Bluetooth, and by default it disengages at 10.5 V on a 12 V system. It cannot deal with reverse current.
Our take
One-way current flow, entering at IN and leaving at OUT, with no handling of reverse current, means this unit serves either a load or a charger at a time. Its 220 A rating holds up to 40°C and drops to 132 A at 60°C.
From our buying guide
NMMA says not to mix battery chemistries or types in the same bank, and the makers add their own limits.
Check before you buy:
- Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.
- Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
- Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
