The Victron Smart Battery Sense long range is a wireless sensor that reads battery voltage and temperature and sends the readings to Victron MPPT solar chargers. This version is named for a range of up to 10m. The link uses VE.Smart Network, which is built on Bluetooth Smart. It fits with two eyelets on the battery terminals and sticks to the battery body with a self-adhesive strip. Because it reads at the terminals, voltage lost in the cabling does not throw off the charge voltage. One, two or more solar chargers on the same 12V, 24V or 48V bank can use its data.
Our take
The sensor reads voltage at the battery terminals, so voltage lost in the cable between battery and charger no longer skews the charge voltage. The 10m range figure in this version's name also sets how far the sensor can sit from the charger.
From our buying guide
On a boat subpart I covers, an electrical component must not ignite fuel vapor around it unless it is isolated from gasoline fuel sources. Ignition protection is the maker's statement.
Check before you buy:
- 33 CFR 183 subpart I applies to boats that have a gasoline engine, except an outboard, so a gasoline generator counts.
- On a boat subpart I covers, each ungrounded output conductor from a battery needs a manually reset, trip-free circuit breaker or fuse within 72 inches of the battery.
