The Victron smallBMS NG is a battery management system built for Victron Lithium NG batteries, not for Lithium Battery Smart ones. It handles charge and load disconnects and gives a pre-alarm for low battery voltage, with built-in Bluetooth. The case is 42 mm wide and rated IP20, and the DC input takes 8 to 70 V. It supports 12V, 24V and 48V systems. It is not suitable for VE.Bus inverter/chargers such as the MultiPlus and Quattro.

Our take

Built-in Bluetooth and battery data arriving straight from the batteries mean a bank on this BMS needs no separate SmartShunt. The trade is the VE.Bus side: it is not suitable for MultiPlus or Quattro inverter/chargers, so it only fits systems without them.

From our buying guide

BCI defines a battery management system as an electronic system that monitors a battery's condition, performance and health. Some lithium batteries have one built in and some need an external unit.

Check before you buy:

  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
  • There is no one low-temperature limit for charging lithium, so take it from the manual for the battery you have.
