- Victron Smart LiFePO4 batteries with M8 circular connectors
The Victron smallBMS is a battery management unit with pre-alarm, made for Smart LiFePO4 batteries from Victron that use M8 round connectors. It can stand in for the VE.Bus BMS V2 in several applications, but it has no VE.Bus interface, so MultiPlus and Quattro inverter/chargers are out. It runs from a DC input of 8 to 70 V. The load disconnect output can source up to 1 A and the pre-alarm output is rated at 1 A, not short circuit protected. Operating range is -20 to 50 °C, with an IP20 enclosure.
Our take
With no VE.Bus interface, the smallBMS cannot be used with MultiPlus or Quattro inverter/chargers, so it belongs in systems that do not need that link. It is meant for Smart LiFePO4 batteries from Victron with M8 round connectors, takes 8 to 70 V DC in, and its pre-alarm output is rated at 1 A.
From our buying guide
BCI defines a battery management system as an electronic system that monitors a battery's condition, performance and health. Some lithium batteries have one built in and some need an external unit.
Check before you buy:
- Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
- There is no one low-temperature limit for charging lithium, so take it from the manual for the battery you have.
