The OrionXS 12/12-50A is a 12 V DC-DC battery charger that delivers a continuous 50 A, or 700 W at 40°C, with up to 98.5 % efficiency. It has Bluetooth and engine running detection. The case is rated IP65 and the unit is not galvanically isolated. Input current can be set between 1 and 50 A to protect the alternator.

Our take

Input current can be limited anywhere from 1 to 50 A, so the charger can be set to stay within what the alternator supplies. The unit is not galvanically isolated, which matters if you wanted the house and engine batteries electrically separate.

From our buying guide

Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.

Check before you buy:

  • It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
