This is an isolated DC-DC charger from Victron's Orion-Tr Smart line, meant for dual battery systems where the alternator and start battery feed a separate service battery. It runs on 12V or 24V systems and uses an adaptive 3-stage charge: bulk, absorption, float. Built-in Bluetooth lets you monitor and program it from a phone or tablet, and it takes a remote on/off input. The case is rated IP43 when installed with the screw terminals facing down, and it copes with ambient temperatures up to 55°C, with full output up to 40°C.
Our take
The output current falls as ambient temperature rises, with full rated output only up to 40°C, so a charger mounted somewhere hot will deliver less than its label. Mounting matters too, since the IP43 rating needs the screw terminals pointing down.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, not the battery's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- Its output suits your bank. ProMariner recommends about 10 percent of the batteries' total amp-hour capacity, with one charger output for each battery.
- It suits how you'll use it, since ProMariner says its waterproof chargers are for batteries not in use while charging.
