The Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-20A is an isolated DC-DC charger from Victron, rated at 240 W. It takes 48 V in and gives 12 V at 20 A, charging in three adaptive stages. It is meant for the starter battery and alternator to charge the service battery. Bluetooth lets you monitor and configure it, and the isolated design gives input and output separate chassis grounds. It works with lead acid and lithium batteries, and any number of units can be paralleled to add output power. It copes with temperatures up to 55°C, with full rated output up to 40°C.
Our take
The isolated design of the 48/12-20A lets input and output have separate chassis grounds, so the 48 V side and the 12 V side need not share a ground through it. Full rated output holds up to 40°C, and it copes with temperatures up to 55°C.
From our buying guide
Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
