The Orion-Tr Smart 24/24-17A is an isolated DC-DC charger from Victron. It runs from a supply between 16 and 35 V and delivers 24.2 V, rated for 17 A continuous output, or 400 W at 40°C. Because it is isolated, the input and output keep separate chassis grounds. Bluetooth is built in for monitoring and setup, and several units can be paralleled to raise the output power. The case is rated IP22 around the connections and IP43 for the electronics.

Our take

Separate chassis grounds for input and output are what this isolated Orion-Tr Smart offers, so the two sides of the system don't have to share a ground through the charger. Its connection area is rated IP22, a step below the IP43 of the electronics, so the wiring end is the less protected part.

From our buying guide

Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.

Check before you buy:

  • It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
