The Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is an isolated DC to DC charger with built-in Bluetooth. It sits between a start battery or alternator and a service battery, charging the second bank with an adaptive three-stage routine: bulk, absorption and float. It handles lead acid and lithium batteries, takes 10-17V DC in and gives 10-15V DC out, and is rated at 360W. It has a remote on-off input and engine running detection for smart alternators. Full output holds to 40°C and it is rated for ambient temperatures up to 55°C, with current reducing as it gets hot.

Our take

The IP43 rating only holds with the screw terminals pointing down, so this is a charger for a dry locker, not an exposed bilge. Its engine running detection is the useful part for a smart alternator feeding a service bank, and current drops as the space heats up.

From our buying guide

NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, not the battery's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.

Check before you buy:

  • It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
  • Its output suits your bank. ProMariner recommends about 10 percent of the batteries' total amp-hour capacity, with one charger output for each battery.
  • It suits how you'll use it, since ProMariner says its waterproof chargers are for batteries not in use while charging.
