The Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-18A is an isolated DC to DC charger with built-in Bluetooth, made for dual battery setups where the alternator and start battery charge a separate service bank on a boat or vehicle. It runs an adaptive three-stage routine of bulk, absorption and float, and suits both lead acid and lithium batteries. This model accepts 8-17V DC in and delivers 10-15V DC out at 220W. Full rated output is held up to 40°C ambient, and it keeps working up to 55°C with output reduced as it heats. Settings are programmable over Bluetooth, and a remote on/off input and engine running detection are included.
Our take
The IP43 rating applies only with the screw terminals pointing down, so this is a charger for a dry locker mounted in the right orientation, not an exposed spot. Output also tapers above 40°C, which matters in a hot engine space.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, not the battery's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- Its output suits your bank. ProMariner recommends about 10 percent of the batteries' total amp-hour capacity, with one charger output for each battery.
- It suits how you'll use it, since ProMariner says its waterproof chargers are for batteries not in use while charging.
