Victron's Orion-Tr 24/12-9A is an isolated DC-DC converter for stepping a 24 V system down to 12 V. It accepts an input of 16 to 35 V and puts out 12.2 V, with galvanic isolation between the two sides. Continuous output is 9 A, and continuous power is 110 W at 25°C and 85 W at 40°C. The 110 W in its name is the 25°C figure. The case is rated IP43 and weighs 0.42 kg.

Our take

Galvanic isolation is the reason to look at this 24 V to 12 V Orion-Tr: the 12 V output side is electrically separate from the 24 V input. Continuous power falls from 110 W at 25°C to 85 W at 40°C, so size the 9 A of loads for the warm end of your range.

From our buying guide

Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.

Check before you buy:

  • It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
