The Victron GlobalLink 520 sends data from VE.Direct devices to the VRM portal over an LTE-M cellular link covering 17 bands. It has two isolated VE.Direct ports, 2 digital inputs and 1 relay, and a prepaid SIM for five years of connectivity. Bluetooth lets it read up to 10 additional Smart devices. It runs from 8 to 70 VDC and the enclosure has an IP20 protection category.
Our take
The 520 uses LTE-M, and Victron itself notes that this network type is not available in many parts of the world, so coverage where you cruise is worth checking first. Two isolated VE.Direct ports cover a battery monitor and a solar controller.
From our buying guide
BCI defines a battery management system as an electronic system that monitors a battery's condition, performance and health. Some lithium batteries have one built in and some need an external unit.
Check before you buy:
- A voltage reading means little until the battery has rested, and each maker sets its own rest and table.
- An amp-hour figure needs its rate, since BCI says rated capacity is specified at a particular discharge rate, temperature and cutoff voltage.
