The Victron Energy Galvanic Isolator VDI-32 A is a shore-power device that deals with low-voltage DC currents entering a boat through the shore power earth wire, the cause of electrolytic corrosion of underwater metals. It is rated for a maximum current of 32 A, with a 3,200 A peak rating for 20 ms. Its diodes begin to conduct at about 1.4 Vdc. The anodized aluminium case weighs 2 kg and is rated IP67.
Our take
A 32 A maximum current rating and a 3,200 A peak rating for 20 ms are the numbers to line up with the shore-power wiring behind it. The diodes conduct only above about 1.4 Vdc, so the isolator is aimed at stray DC corrosion currents, not at normal AC supply.
From our buying guide
On a boat subpart I covers, an electrical component must not ignite fuel vapor around it unless it is isolated from gasoline fuel sources. Ignition protection is the maker's statement.
Check before you buy:
- 33 CFR 183 subpart I applies to boats that have a gasoline engine, except an outboard, so a gasoline generator counts.
- Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
