The Victron VDI-16 A is a galvanic isolator for a boat's shore power connection. It prevents electrolytic corrosion by blocking low voltage DC currents coming in on the shore power earth wire. Inside are two diodes wired in opposite directions, and they conduct only above about 1.4 Vdc. It is rated for a maximum of 16 A, with a 1,600 A peak for 20ms, and its case is rated IP67.
Our take
The VDI-16 A is rated for a maximum of 16 A, so check the shore power draw against that figure before fitting it, since the isolator sits directly behind the boat's 230V connection. Its IP67 case is a point in its favour.
From our buying guide
On a boat subpart I covers, an electrical component must not ignite fuel vapor around it unless it is isolated from gasoline fuel sources. Ignition protection is the maker's statement.
Check before you buy:
- 33 CFR 183 subpart I applies to boats that have a gasoline engine, except an outboard, so a gasoline generator counts.
- Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
