The Cyrix-i 12/24V-400A is a battery combiner: a microprocessor-controlled relay that links batteries in parallel while one is being charged and separates them again when it is not. It carries 400 A continuous and 2,000 A for 1 second. It detects 12 V or 24 V automatically, has a 30 second start assist, and draws 4 mA when open. There is virtually no voltage loss across it, so the charging source does not need a raised output.
Our take
The 2,000 A one-second peak rating on top of 400 A continuous gives the relay room for heavy surges between banks. Because it is a relay with virtually no voltage loss, alternator output does not need raising to make up for it.
From our buying guide
NMMA says not to mix battery chemistries or types in the same bank, and the makers add their own limits.
Check before you buy:
- Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.
- Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
- Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
