The Cyrix-ct 12/24V-120A is a battery combiner that detects 12 V or 24 V automatically. Victron describes the Cyrix family as relay combiners that join batteries in parallel once one reaches a set voltage. This one is rated 120 A continuous and 180 A for a 5 second cranking surge, and its start assist keeps it closed for 30 seconds. It connects on M6 bolts, sits in an IP54 case, and draws 4 mA when open and 220 mA when closed at 12 V.

Our take

Because the Cyrix-ct is a relay rather than a diode, there is virtually no voltage drop across it, so alternator output needn't be raised to compensate. It is rated 120 A continuous with 180 A for 5 seconds of cranking, and draws 220 mA at 12 V while closed.

From our buying guide

NMMA says not to mix battery chemistries or types in the same bank, and the makers add their own limits.

Check before you buy:

  • Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.
  • Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
  • Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
