The Victron Centaur Charger 12/50 (3) is a 12 V battery charger rated for 50 A nominal output, split across 3 charge outputs. It is ignition protected and recommended for battery banks of 200 to 500 Ah. Absorption voltage is 14.3 V. The aluminium enclosure is rated IP20, and output drops to about 80% of nominal when ambient temperature reaches 50°C.
Our take
The output falls to about 80% of nominal at 50°C, so a 50 A charger in a hot compartment delivers less than its rating. The IP20 enclosure also calls for a dry mounting spot, while the 3 outputs can serve separate batteries.
From our buying guide
NMMA says charging sources must meet the charging profile the battery maker recommends. A charger's presets are its own maker's, not the battery's, so set it from the battery maker's figures.
Check before you buy:
- It can follow your battery's profile, since not every charger can follow a lithium maker's.
- Its output suits your bank. ProMariner recommends about 10 percent of the batteries' total amp-hour capacity, with one charger output for each battery.
- It suits how you'll use it, since ProMariner says its waterproof chargers are for batteries not in use while charging.
