The BMV-702 is a battery monitor with a display that works out amp hours consumed and state of charge by tracking current into and out of the battery. It comes with a 500A / 50mV shunt, and the display connects to the shunt over a 10 metre cable. It measures current to 0.4 % accuracy and state of charge to 0.1 % resolution, and runs from a 6.5 to 95 VDC supply. It draws 4 mA, and its IP55 rating is marked not for outdoor use.

Our take

The display-to-shunt cable is 10 metre long, so the included 500A shunt can stay beside the battery while the readout is mounted well away from it. The IP55 rating is marked not for outdoor use, so mount the display below deck or under cover.

From our buying guide

An amp-hour figure needs its rate, since BCI says rated capacity is specified at a particular discharge rate, temperature and cutoff voltage.

Check before you buy:

  • A voltage reading means little until the battery has rested, and each maker sets its own rest and table.
  • Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
