- Two series connected 12 V batteries
The Victron Battery Balancer evens out the state of charge of two 12 V batteries wired in series to make a 24 V bank. It switches on once the charge voltage climbs above 27 V and then compares the voltage across the two batteries. Balancing starts at a midpoint deviation of 50 mV, with a maximum balancing current of 0.7 A. An alarm triggers at 200 mV, and a 48 V bank can be balanced with three units.
Our take
Balancing current tops out at 0.7 A and only begins at a 50 mV midpoint deviation, so this unit nudges a 24 V bank toward even charge rather than forcing it. The 200 mV alarm trigger is the figure that flags a pair that has drifted well apart.
From our buying guide
BCI defines a battery management system as an electronic system that monitors a battery's condition, performance and health. Some lithium batteries have one built in and some need an external unit.
Check before you buy:
- Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
- There is no one low-temperature limit for charging lithium, so take it from the manual for the battery you have.
