The Argodiode 160-2AC is a diode battery isolator for charging two batteries from one alternator. The batteries stay unconnected to each other, so draining the accessory battery does not also drain the starter battery. It is rated for a maximum alternator and charge current of 160 A on 12V or 24V systems. Battery connections are M8 bolts, and the unit weighs 1.1 kg.
Our take
The 160 A maximum alternator current and the Schottky diodes mean the Argodiode 160-2AC shares one alternator between two batteries with low voltage drop. The batteries are never joined, so running down the house bank leaves the starter battery alone.
From our buying guide
NMMA says not to mix battery chemistries or types in the same bank, and the makers add their own limits.
Check before you buy:
- Each maker sets its own alternator rules. Battle Born calls a DC-to-DC charger a simple and safe way to use alternator charging.
- Battle Born warns that a BMS shutdown leaves the vessel without power, and that one during alternator charging can severely damage the alternator.
- Ignition protection on a charger or switch is the maker's statement, so read what it says and which standard it names.
